Life on the move means we all rely on portable devices to save ourselves time and effort. However, nothing is more frustrating than when trying to make an important call or take that special picture, to find that your battery has just died. You may sometimes think that you are just cursed with bad battery luck but there’s no secret to making those batteries last longer. Below we outline a few tips to help you get the most out of your battery operated devices.
Keep your gadgets out of your pockets
Keeping your phone or iPod in your pocket may seem like a normal thing to do but your body heat damages lithium-ion batteries. This will shorten battery life. Leave them in your bag or coat to keep them cooler and lasting longer.
Charge your batteries at least once a month
Batteries do not lose their charge as quickly if the electrons are kept mobile. If you know that you will not be using a device for a while, run it’s battery down to half way, and store in the fridge (this really works!)
Download the latest firmware
Download the latest firmware (i.e. update your iPod) from the manufacturers, as these often contain updates which help extend your battery’s life.
Allow your battery run down
Most batteries are conditioned to be let run down, then fully charged. Partially charging your batteries lowers their life.
Mobile phone battery life
Looking after the battery on our mobile phones is one area we can all benefit from.
o Turn off the vibrate function for when you receive messages and calls
o Don’t play games on your phone as this is a real power killer
o Turn off the 3G connection, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not using them. These can quietly eat away at your battery life without you noticing.
o If you have an iPhone, turn off the “push e-mail” so that it is not constantly checking for messages. Instead retrieve emails manually to increase the time between charges.
Laptop battery life
Getting the maximum outage from your laptop/ notebook battery can sometimes mean the difference between catching the end of the movie you’re watching or finishing an important presentation.
o Make sure your laptop doesn’t overheat. Rather than placing it on a cushion or your lap, place on a wooden or glass table so that the air is cooled partially. Let the fan work effectively by not blocking it.
o Putting your laptop into hibernate mode may make it slower to reboot than when you leave it on standby but this helps to lengthen your battery life. Hibernation mode saves your desktop to the last place you used it while also turning the computer off.
o Close down unnecessary programs. You can do this by hitting “CTRL+ALT+DEL” and ending unnecessary tasks.
o Control which programs run on start up. Go to the “Start” menu, and click on “Run.” Type in “msconfig” and click ok. Click on the “Startup” tab and choose which program you need to run at startup and which programs to uncheck. For example, MSN messenger is not an essential program on start up, however your virus protection will be. Be careful of your choices, if in doubt, don’t uncheck it.
o If you watch a lot of movies directly from DVD’s, your laptop will have to work harder to spin the disc as it read’s it. To help your battery survive longer, try having your movies stored on to the hard-disc or a USB drive.
Camera battery life
One of the great advantages of digital cameras is being able to see pictures immediately after taking them so you know which ones to delete. This privilege comes at a massive cost to your battery life. Leave the preview screen turned off to extend the battery life considerably. You can delete poor quality pictures later, and potentially not miss out on a once in a lifetime photo opportunity.
MP3 player’s battery life
There is nothing more annoying than being in the gym or on a journey and having your MP3 player die. To extend your MP3 player’s battery life, lower the screen brightness and turn down the volume. Brightness settings can be found in the setup or options screen of your player.
If your MP3 player has a ‘lock’ option, be sure to use this so you don’t accidentally play your entire collection in your pocket, wasting another valuable charge cycle.
